Debunking Suncare Myths
Sunbathing is cool, being active outdoors is cool, and staying indoors is comfy too. So, where do we draw the line between needing to wear sun care and ditching it?
And here we are again. Before you decide this topic doesn't interest you, consider spending a few extra minutes to read what we have to share because this is a serious issue that many people haven't taken seriously.
We all know some people who wouldn't leave home without sun care, or as it's commonly known, sunblock. For many, the idea of applying sunblock seems unnecessary, thinking it won't cause much harm if it's not too sunny.
But did you know that excessive sun exposure puts you at a high risk of skin cancer? And if you want to maintain that flawless, pigmentation-free baby skin, the first step is to diligently apply sun care. Oui ma beauté! You heard me right.
If you have doubts about sun care, we are here to debunk it with reference from a reliable sources. Let's dive in...
🌞3 Main Sun Care Myths That Will Change Your Mind :-
Myth #1 : Not A Sunny Day - No Sunscreen Needed
It's a beautiful day, isn't it? Not too sunny, not too gloomy. While a hot sunny day can cause sunburn and sun damage to your skin, the same can be said for cold, cloudy weather.
Though clouds filter some UVB rays, they don’t block UVA rays, which are a risk factor for melanoma.
The same applies when you spend a lot of time indoors. UV rays can penetrate through windows. Although the exposure may not be as high as being outdoors, the keyword here is 'exposure.' You are still exposed to a certain level of UV rays.
Myth #2 : All Sun Care are made the same
You might have heard of this but this could also be something new to most people. There are 2 type of sunscreen available in the market. Lets break it down their differences and benefits.
Physical blockers: This type of sun care reflect ultraviolet rays from the sun.
Chemical blockers: This type of sun care contain chemicals that absorb the sun's ultraviolet rays.
Both would have it's strong advantages and as which one is more suitable for you, that would depends on your personal choice and lifestyle.
Myth #3 : Sunscreen cause Skin Cancer
The sun emits ultraviolet (UV) radiation, which is the primary cause of skin cancer. UV radiation is classified into three types: UVA, UVB, and UVC. UVC is mostly absorbed by the Earth’s atmosphere and doesn't reach the ground, but UVA and UVB rays penetrate the atmosphere and can damage the skin.
🌞Here's how UV radiation can lead to skin cancer:
-
DNA Damage: UV radiation can penetrate the skin and cause direct damage to the DNA in skin cells. When DNA is damaged, it can lead to mutations during cell replication. If these mutations occur in genes that control cell growth and division, they can cause cells to grow uncontrollably, leading to cancer.
-
Immune System Suppression: UV radiation can also suppress the local immune response in the skin. This makes it harder for the body to detect and repair damaged cells or to remove cells that have begun to grow abnormally.
-
Types of UV Rays:
- UVA Rays: These rays penetrate deeper into the skin, reaching the dermis. They are primarily responsible for photoaging (premature aging of the skin) and can indirectly cause DNA damage through the generation of free radicals, which in turn can lead to mutations.
- UVB Rays: These rays primarily affect the outer layer of the skin (epidermis) and are the main cause of sunburn. UVB radiation directly damages the DNA in skin cells, which can lead to mutations and skin cancer.
There have been misconceptions about sunscreen causing skin cancer. However, this is likely due to excessive sun exposure and inadequate use of sunscreen. If you're active outdoors, sweating heavily, or swimming, it's crucial to reapply sunscreen to ensure continuous protection. As we sweat or wipe our faces, we remove layers of the sunscreen applied earlier. Therefore, regular reapplication is essential for maintaining effective protection
