Let's Talk About Dead Skin Cells!

Have you never exfoliated your skin, whether your face or body? Did you know that our skin cells are alive?

Throughout their life cycle, skin cells move through the layers of the skin to the outermost layer. Once they reach the surface, skin cells die and shed away. Not exfoliating your skin can eventually lead to a dull complexion, clogged pores, acne breakouts, and an overall poor appearance. When old skin cells shed, newer skin is revealed underneath, giving you a more vibrant and youthful look (National Skin Cancer Centers).

Do Dead Skin Cells Shed on Their Own?

Dead skin cells can build up over time and sometimes don't shed the way they should. Many factors contribute to this, including age, improper cleansing, inadequate exfoliation, weather, environmental pollution, using the wrong moisturizer, and more.

The Importance of Exfoliation

We've learned that our skin cells are living entities that will eventually die, allowing new cells to emerge and give you vibrant skin. However, sometimes dead cells don't shed as they should, and this is where exfoliation comes into play. Why is exfoliating important as part of your skincare routine, and how can it help you achieve clean, radiant, and glowing skin?

First up, we need to know that there are 2 types of exfoliation that you can do:-

  1. Mechanical (or physical) exfoliation: This involves using tools such as brushes, sponges, or devices to physically remove dead skin cells.
  2. Chemical exfoliation: This involves using products containing AHA (alpha hydroxy acids) or BHA (beta hydroxy acids) to liquefy dead skin cells. This works on a micro-level to dissolve excess skin cells and reduce uneven pigmentation on the skin's surface.

Regardless of how you choose to exfoliate, know that this step helps rejuvenate your skin, making it brighter and clearer. Proper and regular exfoliation can help prevent breakouts and reduce acne scars.

🤔However, overdoing this step can have negative consequences. Here's why:

  1. Using the wrong products and techniques can lead to issues such as irritation, redness, and damage to the skin barrier.
  2. Over-exfoliation can cause your skin to become dehydrated, making fine lines and wrinkles more visible.

OOPS~ If you've read this far and realize you’ve over-exfoliated your skin, DON'T WORRY—IT'S NEVER TOO LATE! Add Ultra-Lipid SOS Serum to your nighttime routine to strengthen your skin barrier and provide immediate soothing effects. It's Sylvie's all-time favorite!!! 😍

Understanding Your Skin

Before jumping into any skincare routine, it's essential to understand your skin type and condition, as well as the products you use and their ingredients. Once you have this knowledge, you can determine how often to exfoliate your skin and the appropriate skincare steps to follow afterward.

Generally speaking, exfoliation can help prevent acne, reduce oil, and improve skin tone. You can exfoliate your face 1–3 times per week. However, these numbers vary depending on your skin type. Those with dry or sensitive skin should opt for once a week, while oilier skin types can exfoliate up to twice a week. Therefore, it is important to first understand your skin type to determine the appropriate exfoliation frequency.

Overcoming Exfoliation Fears

It's understandable why some people avoid exfoliating due to past negative experiences. Before working in a skincare company, we were just like you—under the impression that all products work the same and that popular products work for everyone. The longer we have work with Sothys now, the more we feel that our years of "knowledge" about skin care seems irrelevant and everyday is learning about new thing  (and we're still learning about our skin every day!).

By understanding your skin and choosing the right exfoliation methods, you can achieve healthier, more radiant skin. If you have never exfoliated before and want to get rid of that pigmentation, or smoothen that skin textures or just wish you have that radiant skin again, maybe it is time to change the skin care game and include this step?
